It’s the wind that blows the dust across your road And the leaves that fall at your lonely door Well, the rent is due and pretty soon the snow And all your rings were pawned for things you’ve blown When the night is long and light has gone to stay Down the hill there comes a chilling breeze And the wolf who shines the brightest eyes your way Will win your heart but tear apart your dreams But where are you now That the tide is out Yes where are you now you say you’re free When the past at last is flooding through your veins Drop your wine and hold your spine up straight Cause the skeleton you keep within your pain Has new clothes but down below the paint You’re standing there alone and bare today And loneliness has blown a kiss to fate With lipstick on the rouge begins to fade You turn your back and then unlatch the gate But where are you now That the tide is out Yes where are you now you say you’re free

She was once one of my truest friends Through boom and bust, from hell and back again The only time I ever saw her cry Was just before she left this world that night I guess it’s true we all must cross that line Me and you we all will cease to shine Well, it ain’t that bad and it ain’t that sad I tell you now cause I feel the same as you Well, it ain’t the fact that we don’t last It’s to leave behind the only world we knew I wish that I could live it all again Below the sky and all across the land But such is life and so it comes with death Deep in the night a dream will find your bed I guess it’s true we all must cross that line For me and you the stars will always shine Well, it ain’t that bad and it ain’t that sad I tell you now cause I feel the same as you Well, it ain’t the fact that we don’t last It’s to leave behind the only world we knew

Down in the hole, down in the mud Looking for my friends but couldn’t find one I was digging with my hands and thinking of my love I talked to the worms, I talked to the dirt But everything they said was covered in hurt Yes, everything was dead and cold was the earth Oh my heart, my bone white teeth Strike the harp and let it bleed Green all grow the trees If they make it through the freeze If they make it through the freeze Don’t knock them on their knees Yes, green all grow the trees Down on the road, another run But the truck broke down and the moss just hung 9 miles out and the phone just rung The fox in her den, safe and warm Full from the hen that lived in the barn Just past the pen the pig calls home Oh my heart, my bone white teeth Strike the harp and let it bleed Green all grow the trees If they make it through the freeze If they make it through the freeze Don’t knock them on their knees Yes, green all grow the trees

I met her back some time ago When all was ripe and still to grow She held a knife out in the snow She was quite the sight for me to hold And like a fool will always go and do I went from being one to being two She cut the bud back to the bloom She drew blood, I drew the blues Slowly, softly looking awfully tame to be a brute Quickly, slowly, highly, lowly somewhere lies the truth Slippery as a newt Fleeting days of youth When your life is furthest from your dreams And the night is darker than your schemes Remember that you overcame such grief When you were born another had to leave Big is small and slipping through your hand Cause we’re all just racing towards the end Hurling like a rocket through the bend Sometimes life is bigger than your plans Slowly, softly looking awfully tame to be a brute Quickly, slowly, highly, lowly somewhere lies the truth Slippery as a newt Fleeting days of youth

When you first left me darling, how I cried But a little bit of time dried those eyes Then I finally got my feet back on the ground And I looked up and saw you were back in town So I packed my things and headed for the coast Somewhere where the fog could be my coat And I wore it like a king would wear a robe But there is just one thing I’d like to know Don’t you ever feel lonely? Do you ever feel good? Is there any reflection Or is your heart solid wood? Don’t you miss my company? Do you think you could? Well, isn’t that something I guess you still bleed blood The moon is out, the dew is too, I don’t know what you’re gonna do An empty house, full of rooms, a dirty couch for no one to use And out of all those things nothing really stings Yeah, nothing really stings quite like the truth The garden grows with plenty kinds of weeds And everybody knows it takes good seeds But when your heart is colder than the rock No matter what you plant will go to rot Don’t you ever feel lonely? Do you ever feel good? Is there any reflection Or is your heart solid wood? Don’t you miss my company? Do you think you could? Well, isn’t that something I guess you still bleed blood

Grandma’s dead and gone, grandma’s dead and gone Grandma’s dead and gone but in the meantime a baby was born Yes a little bitty baby was born Mother cried all night long, mother cried all night long Mother cried all night long, no lullaby could bring her calm Everything I sang was wrong Daughter felt so alone, daughter felt so alone Daughter felt so alone and the ache wouldn’t leave her bones Yeah the ache had found a home The moon and sun did glow, the moon and sun did glow The moon and sun did glow, and the secret still unknown For to tell it can’t be shown Grandma’s dead and gone, grandma’s dead and gone Grandma’s dead and gone but in the meantime a baby was born Yes a little bitty baby was born

She had a bed, the kind that creaks and groans Where I could rest my head and dream in poems And her amber light thrown around the room Like the dappled pines weaving time back home to bloom Yes, those days are gone, those days have gone away But where’s the swan, the swan who has no lake? It’s a long way back to where I’ve been And it moves so fast will it ever go slow again? She had a dog, her very deepest friend When the nights were hot so was the bed And the traffic sound outside her door Kept us up with the hound down on the floor Yes, those days are gone, those days have gone away But where’s the swan, the swan who has no lake? It’s a long way back to where I’ve been And it moves so fast will it ever go slow again?

The sun has gone to hide its rays And all along the coast beat the waves My heart is a stone, it shatters and breaks But a sculpture is born out of all of these flakes The river runs pure by the secret old spring And a tree at its core hides its halo in the rings The angel of war and the angel of peace Both yearn to score one more for the team Don’t go get lost in the storm Don’t disappear in the leaves There’s a baby who needs to be born In a world so torn that it bleeds The past is a plant growing wild and free When the future comes last then what do we dream? A boat on the sea has been lost in the fog But the fog horns don’t weep they blow through the dawn Don’t go get lost in the storm Don’t disappear in the leaves There’s a baby who needs to be born In a world so torn that it bleeds The sun has gone to hide its face And all along the coast beat the waves

My home is a mess but I still think of you But the hole in your chest how it grew and grew I tried to fill it in with a redwood tree But I could never change what you could never be I know all the lines across your lonely face There’s just as many roads to find the same old place And there’s just as many stars reflected in your eyes But when the daylight breaks don’t let the night time die The trees by the bank of the rushing stream Have the rain to thank for everything And maybe it’s just a little too soon to tell But maybe it’s time to shed that tattered shell The bus down the street slowly pulls away As the crows in the tree on the breeze they sway The lamp flickers on in the evening light And the damp like a claw up against your eye A newspaper swirls on a ghostly breeze Of all in the world she’s there next to me And out of my mind goes your memory It waves one more time before it all breaks free The trees by the bank of the rushing stream Have the rain to thank for everything And maybe it’s just a little too soon to tell But maybe it’s time to shed that tattered shell

You said you needed time but your heart gave out Then you squeezed the lime with the shades pulled down And the morning mist kissed the firs I heard the kettle hiss become a roar All aboard this battered ship The sails are torn and tattered bits Swim to shore don’t forget For she who’s born must now live You sang the sirens song but no one heard You know it won’t be long before the tide will turn Soon they will hum and know the words What’s good for some, for others worse All aboard this battered ship The sails are torn and tattered bits Swim to shore don’t forget For she who’s born must now live You said you needed time but your heart gave out
